Patents

At Bosch, new ideas are a thriving tradition. Around the world, thousands of Bosch employees develop new products and systematically improve and innovate those already developed every day. The fruit of this collective effort is manifested in 3,280 patent applications filed in 2007 alone.
Patents – Ideas for the future
That Bosch is a technology leader in so many fields is a result of the persistent and continuous research conducted in the company's Development Centers. This is where, for example revolutionary braking and security systems like ABS and ESP® and new methods for cutting pollutant emissions were born and are being continuously improved by new and patented developments.
High-performing, safe and eco-friendly products that are also easy to operate are usually based on an extended development and patent career.
Bosch patents worldwide
Since Bosch operates throughout the world, the company's patents are also registered in many countries. The patent applications filed in their patent offices are testimony to the creativity of the employees of the Bosch Group and its role as a global motor of innovation. In terms of patent application numbers, Bosch is the second biggest applicant in Germany, the third biggest at the European Patent Office and the biggest foreign patent applicant in Japan. In the United States, Bosch is the company with the largest number of patent applications in the field of automotive technology. Not all ideas developed at Bosch are registered for patent, however. Many valuable smaller discoveries are simply published. They can be studied in the public showcase at Gate 10 in Bregenzerstrasse in Stuttgart-Feuerbach, where Bosch displays new ideas every week.
Commercial protective rights
Patents are a vital instrument for protecting the results of years of expensive research against imitators. They permit Bosch not just to secure its own technology leadership, but also to let others participate in it as licensees. Bosch operates an elaborate system to ascertain that the company's protective rights are being observed and to detect any breaches of these rights.
