He was born in Calw on September 17, 1943. He is married to Dr. phil. Montserrat Todenhöfer, and has three daughters. After studying law at Tübingen and Berlin, he passed his “Assessor” (higher legal qualification) examinations in Stuttgart in 1972. He began his professional career as head of the legal department with the telecommunications company Walter Rose KG, in Hagen. In 1974, he joined the Corporate Department Legal/Foreign Affairs of Robert Bosch GmbH. In 1975 he moved to Spain, where he was a partner in the legal firm of Dr. Frühbeck and special representative of Robert Bosch GmbH until 1992. Moreover, he was general partner of his parents‘ business until the end of the 1980’s. In 1992, Todenhöfer returned to Germany and was appointed deputy member of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH. In 1993, he was appointed member of the board of management and director of industrial relations. In 1996 he also became a limited partner of Robert Bosch Industrietreuhand KG, the Bosch Group holding company, and has been one of its two managing partners since mid-2003. From 1999 to 2003, he was deputy chairman of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH. He has been a member of the supervisory council of Robert Bosch GmbH since 2004.
From January 1, 2004, Todenhöfer was the last commissioner of the Carl Zeiss Stiftung, and from September 2004 to September 2008 chairman of this foundation’s board of trustees, as well as of the supervisory boards of Carl Zeiss AG and Schott AG. Todenhöfer was chairman of the council of Tübingen University from 2000 to 2009, and has been a member of the supervisory boards of Deutsche Bank AG and Hochtief AG since 2001 and 2008 respectively. Todenhöfer was also deputy chairman of Stuttgart’s International Bach Academy from 1993 to 2010.
In 2003, Todenhöfer was awarded the Cross of Merit, first class, of the Federal German Order of Merit. In 2007, he was made an Officer of the French Legion of Honor. He is an honorary senator of Tübingen University In 2010, the German Chamber of Commerce for Spain presented Todenhöfer with the second German-Spanish prize for business excellence.
