Dr.-Ing. Jorge Guajardo Merchan

I am most excited about developing technologies that take advantage of ideas at the intersection of computer science, engineering, and physics and how principles from each of these domains interact to solve hard security problems. From a technology point of view, I am interested in novel constructions and applications of physical unclonable functions, developing optimized protocols for multi-party computation, implementing applied cryptographic schemes in constrained environments, and developing novel hardware architectures to improve the performance and overall security of systems.

Please tell us what fascinates you most about research.
The most fascinating aspect of doing research is that you are constantly asking interesting questions about hard problems and coming up with new solutions that no one has thought about before.

What makes research done at Bosch so special?
The ability to deploy the technologies that you have developed in such a large number of applications and, as a result, the potential for huge impact on everyday life.

What research topics are you currently working on at Bosch?
My team and I focus in two main areas:
1) embedded security technologies applied to automotive and industrial systems and
2) the implementation of distributed secure computation techniques with the aim to provide strong privacy guarantees to privacy-sensitive data.

What are the biggest scientific challenges in your field of research?
I would highlight three challenges: (i) providing strong security assurance for the overall system when integrating parts and components whose individual security is hard to guarantee, (ii) developing technologies that are secure and, at the same time, are practical, and (iii) developing solutions that will allow us to say something about the security state of long-lived products with lifespans that can be several decades long.

How do the results of your research become part of solutions “Invented for life”?
Bosch develops products and services that touch our everyday life, that are intelligent, high quality, and interconnected. Security and privacy technologies are essential enablers for any such products and one very important and visible manner to measure the high quality of everything Bosch makes.
